Filter Cloths: Selection, Maintenance & FAQs

At N.M. Patel & Co., we provide custom-tailored filter cloths designed to maximize the performance of your filter press. Whether you're operating a recessed, membrane, plate & frame, or CGR-style filter press, choosing the right filter cloth is essential for filtration efficiency, cake formation, and long-term system health.

Below, we’ve answered the most common questions we receive about filter cloths — from selection and replacement to installation and compatibility.

How do I choose the right filter cloth for my application? +

  • Slurry type (viscosity, chemical composition, temperature)
  • Desired filtrate clarity and cake dryness
  • Filter press type (CGR, non-gasketed, plate & frame, etc.)
  • Cycle time and cleaning schedule
  • At N.M. Patel & Co., we test your slurry in our lab to match it with the perfect cloth — optimizing filtration, reducing blinding, and improving cake release.

When should I replace my filter cloths? +

You may need to replace your cloths if:

  • Your filter press is no longer producing solid cakes
  • You observe reduced pressure despite regular cleaning
  • The filtrate is cloudy or contains impurities
  • The cloth has stretched, warped, or worn out
  • Even with cleaning, fine particles can clog the cloth over time, reducing permeability. In such cases, replacement is more efficient than repeated washing.

How long do filter cloths last? +

    Filter cloth life depends on:

  • Slurry abrasiveness
  • Cycle frequency
  • Chemical compatibility and cloth material
  • Type of cleaning (manual, chemical, or automatic)
  • With proper maintenance, filter cloths can last several hundred to thousands of cycles. However, exposure to harsh chemicals or poor cleaning can significantly shorten their life.

Tips: Use automated cloth washing systems and avoid over-tightening to extend cloth performance.

What types of filter cloths are available at N.M. Patel & Co.? +

We offer a wide range of high-performance cloths, including:

  • Polypropylene (PP) – General purpose, chemically resistant
  • Polyester (PET) – Higher strength, heat resistance
  • Nylon – Abrasion resistant, flexible
  • PTFE (Teflon Coated) – High-temperature and aggressive chemicals
  • Anti-static Cloths – For explosive or powdery environments
  • Needle Felt – For thick slurry and sludge
  • Food-Grade Cloths – For sugar, oil, beverages, and more
  • Cloths are available in monofilament, multifilament, woven, and nonwoven configurations.

What are head cloths, intermediate cloths, and tail cloths? +

Head Cloth: Mounted on the head plate, typically with a center feed hole. Available as barrel-neck, overhang, or gasketed.

Intermediate Cloths: The majority of cloths in a filter press, installed on the filter plates between head and tail.

Tail Cloth: Attached to the tail plate, often without a center hole. Final stage of filtration.

Each cloth is designed for a specific plate location and has custom cutouts for perfect alignment and sealing.

What’s the difference between CGR and NG plates in cloth design? +

CGR (Caulked, Gasketed, Recessed): Leak-proof design using octagonal cloths with a sewn-in rope for sealing. Ideal for clean or hazardous processes.

NG (Non-Gasketed): Faster to install with rectangular cloths. Some minor dripping may occur, but it’s easier to maintain and replace.

We supply cloths for both CGR and NG styles, including attachment accessories and fitting guides.

What does “cloth blinding” mean? +

Cloth blinding refers to the condition where solids clog the pores of the cloth, blocking filtrate flow and reducing efficiency. It typically results from:

  • Fine particles lodging deep in the fabric
  • Improper cleaning
  • Chemical or heat degradation
  • Solutions: Backflushing, chemical wash, or cloth replacement.

How are filter cloths installed? +

    Cloths can be attached using:

  • Straps or ties (non-gasketed)
  • Caulking cords (for CGR)
  • Velcro, eyelets, or sewn-in loops
  • Center neck collars (for barrel-neck designs)
  • We provide installation guides for all cloth styles, and our team can assist with on-site fitting and training if needed.

Can I test which cloth is best for my slurry? +

Absolutely. At N.M. Patel & Co., we offer lab-scale slurry testing. By sending us your slurry sample, we can:

  • Identify optimal cloth material and weave
  • Predict cycle time and filtrate quality
  • Determine cake behavior and washability
  • Provide a full test report to support your cloth selection
  • How can I order replacement filter cloths? +

    We make the process simple:

  • Share your filter press model and plate size
  • Specify the slurry type or application
  • Choose your preferred cloth material and configuration
  • Approve drawing or sample (if required)
  • Place order for fast production and delivery
  • Need help? Our team will guide you through every step — and provide sample cloths for validation, if needed.
